District Pinewood Derby is coming up in Wiesbaden, March 4!
I’m just about to celebrate my one year mark of “only one hour a week,” so this is my first season experiencing a Pinewood Derby. And wow, I am amazed at the craftsmanship, creativity, and engineering feats that is made from those little blocks of wood.
I didn’t know what to expect. We showed up at Pack 243’s workday as a complete blank slate. My Webelos aged son and I knew nothing – but he said he wanted a car that looked like a fox character he likes, and there was a kind volunteer who helped us with the initial design and wood cut. From there we were given sandpaper and instructions on how to get to that magic weight limit of 5 ounces. He worked on it over the next week, and created a Derby car that he was proud to show off.
We went to the Pack Derby and experienced the thrill of racing a car of your own imagination. It was fun and exciting to see the different outcomes based on design and workmanship. Now is the time that Packs across Barbarossa District are running their own Pinewood Derbys, and we will take the Pack winning cars and race them at the District Derby coming up in Wiesbaden on March 4. I hope your cubs out there are having as much fun creating a car that my own son had – it was definitely an experience to remember!
